Report: West Ham make U-turn on deal for 'phenomenal' star after transfer talks held

West Ham United's interest in Southampton star Aaron Ramsdale has gone 'lukewarm', according to The Guardian.

The Hammers are looking to strengthen their squad this summer, with veteran goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski among those who will leave the club at the end of their contract at the end of the month.

The Irons had previously held talks with Southampton over a move for England international Ramsdale, but their interest has now cooled.

Alphonse Areola is the current number one goalkeeper at the London Stadium, but he struggled in the 2024/25 season as Potter led the team to a 14th-place finish after taking over from Julen Lopetegui in January.

Potter was said to be very interested in a deal for Ramsdale, even telling West Ham to make a move for the former Arsenal star, who has been described as "phenomenal" by David Seaman.

But now The Guardian report that West Ham's interest is now described as 'lukewarm', suggesting that they may be looking at alternative targets instead.

Ramsdale is also attracting interest from newly-promoted club Leeds, with the 27-year-old having a £25m release clause in his contract following Southampton's relegation to the Championship.

The Saints are looking to sell Ramsdale to get his £100,000-a-week wages off their books, but it now looks unlikely that a move to east London will be taking place.

West Ham have already sealed a free transfer signing of Celtic striker Daniel Cummings as their first deal of the summer,

with the 19-year-old completing his medical at the London Stadium, and the move will be made official once his contract at Celtic expires.

There are big question marks around the future of forwards Mohammed Kudus and Lucas Paqueta too, which suggests this will be a busy summer transfer window under Potter.
