Everton have been chasing a move for Newcastle United’s Sean Longstaff in recent weeks as David Moyes looks to strengthen the squad at his disposal ahead of next season.

The Scotsman oversaw a remarkable turnaround after returning to the Toffees back in January, and he and the club hierarchy will now surely have their sights set on pushing themsleves into the top half of the Premier League table next term.

If the Merseysiders are to continue on their recent upward trajectory, they will need plenty of new additions this summer in order to refresh the squad. One of the players who has been targeted so far is Sean Longstaff, who has one year remaining on his current deal in the North East.

The midfielder’s contract situation means Everton may be able to bring him to Bramley-Moore for a cut-price fee, but they are set to face competition from the likes of Leeds for his signature.

Any Everton move for Longstaff will have to wait until the end of the window

Everton had seemingly been well-placed to bring Longstaff to Merseyside recently, but now it appears that they will have to be patient if they are to get their man.

The midfielder is currently away on holiday but could potentially have a deciding say in where his long-term future may lie.

Newcastle’s departing sporting director, Paul Mitchell, was of the view that Longstaff would represent a good option to generate ‘pure profit,’ which would help aid the Magpies’ PSR standing. However, Eddie Howe is reportedly keen for Longstaff to stay and fight for his place, according to the print edition of The Chronicle (10 June, pg. 43).

The 27-year-old may well have a desire for more long-term security than what his Newcastle deal is currently providing, but for now, any potential moves to either Everton or Leeds have been parked, with a final decision expected to come later down the line.

Everton may be best to move on from Longstaff

With a deal for Longstaff seemingly off the cards for now, Everton may be better served turning their attention towards any other potential midfield targets.

The Toffees have also been touted as potential suitors for West Ham’s Tomas Soucek, who Moyes was extremely fond of during his time in East London.

Longstaff would definitely be a good option for the L3 outfit, as he is a reliable and experienced campaigner in the Premier League, who would likely be available at the cheaper end of the market.

However, with a deal now likely not available until the closing stages of the window, if at all, Everton will surely want to get a new man through the door before then, to give Moyes the best chance to prepare his players.
