Former Packers placekicker dies in Poygan

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - A placekicker who played for the Green Bay Packers for three seasons in the 1980s died unexpectedly last week, according to his obituary.

Eddie Garcia was 65 years old when he died at his home in Poygan.

He grew up in Texas and played football for Southern Methodist University. He was drafted by the Packers in 1982 and during his 3 seasons he completed 14 of 15 extra point kicks but as a kicker only made 3 out of 9 field goal attempts.

He had more success for the Packers and community off the field.

After his NFL career, he went into sales with Oshkosh Corporation and Oshkosh Defense. He was the contract administrator for Oshkosh Defense’s Palletized Load System in 1991, when it played a key role in moving supplies and artillery during Operation Desert Storm.

He’s credited with facilitating Oshkosh’s sponsorship of the Packers’ Military Appreciation Game to honor active-duty service members and veterans.

In 2021, he was elected to the Green Bay Packers Board of Directors. His responsibilities on the Sales and Marketing Committee included distributing funds to charities and nonprofits.

A Catholic service in Garcia’s honor will be held next Friday, June 20, at 12 p.m. at St. Vincent Church in St. Jude the Apostle Parish, beginning with an open house at 10 a.m.

The family requests donations to the Bob Woodruff Foundation or to the Gridiron Greats Assistance Fund in lieu of flowers.
