Barcelona are in the midst of a goalkeeping overhaul, with the club poised to sign Joan Garcia from Espanyol.

However, this has left Marc-Andre ter Stegen in a precarious position, with Barcelona ready to offload him this summer.

Ter Stegen, for his part, feels betrayed and is keen on staying at the club at all costs, even if it means waging a war against Barça.

Bernd Schuster on ter Stegen’s situation at Barcelona

In a recent interview with Eldesmarque (h/t SPORT), former Barcelona player Bernd Schuster has offered his two cents on the ter Stegen situation.

The German raised his concerns around Barcelona’s desire to sell the goalkeeper this summer, stating, “I don’t know if it’s fair because he’s coming back from injury.”

An attacking midfielder back in his day, Schuster played for Barcelona between 1980 and 1988, featuring in 241 competitive matches for the club before joining Real Madrid.

While Schuster sided with Ter Stegen, he did resonate with Barcelona’s dilemma considering the club are signing Joan Garcia.

“The directors and perhaps the coach have to make decisions, and they have signed a great Spanish goalkeeper. Now they have three goalkeepers who can perfectly be starters. I understand this because you have to get rid of a problem,” he said.

Schuster, though, wants Ter Stegen to remain at Barcelona, especially after working so hard to become Germany’s number one.

“I wouldn’t like him to leave Barça,” he said. “He’s fought his whole life for the German national team; he always had other goalkeepers ahead of him, and now he’s finally managed to become an undisputed starter.”

“At Barcelona, he was undisputed until his injury. I hope it ends well because he has become one of the best goalkeepers in the world,” he added.

As mentioned earlier, Ter Stegen has no desire to leave Barcelona either, though he is starting to attract the interest of several European clubs in light of his recent situation at the club.
