Manchester City have signed Marcus Bettinelli from Chelsea on a one-year contract until 2026.
The 33-year-old’s move comes after City’s third choice goalkeeper Scott Carson announced he would be leaving the club at the end of the month, with Bettinelli fulfilling that role.
He is Pep Guardiola’s second signing of the summer after Rayan Ait-Nouri joined the club from Wolverhampton Wanderers for £31m.
After signing his contract, Bettinelli said: “It's an honour to sign for City. I have admired from afar what this club have achieved since Pep Guardiola arrived and now, I am excited to be a part of building on that success.
“I can't wait to work with Pep, Xabi Mancisidor and the excellent goalkeepers already here and see their methods up close.
“Hopefully I can contribute in training, the dressing room and on the pitch as we look to win more silverware over the next year.”
Bettinelli will be a part of Guardiola’s Club World Cup squad and as a result will travel to the United States in the coming days.
The shot-stopper made just one appearance for Chelsea after joining in 2021.
‘Hungriest in the market’ - why are City making so many signings this summer?
Though the Club World Cup is seen as merely a money maker for Fifa, it’s another opportunity for Guardiola’s side to bolster their trophy collection.
This season was tough for the eight-time Premier League champions and was Guardiola’s worst season to date since he joined the club in 2016.
However, the Catalan is going to America heavily armed with new signings coming left, right and centre.
City completed the signing of Ait-Nouri after he had a medical last weekend, with AC Milan midfielder Tijjani Reijnders also set to be announced.
Bettinelli joins City with the role of bringing the team together and being there if either Ederson or Stefan Ortega are sidelined.
And it’s also expected that Lyon’s Rayan Cherki is also to join City after scouts of the Premier League side were impressed over a number of seasons by the 21-year-old.
