Report: Man Utd approach for 'sensational' Onana replacement 10 years after being quoted £143m for the player at 16

Manchester United are in the market for a new goalkeeper this summer after a season packed with Andre Onana howlers.

There are only so many times a goalkeeper can make crucial errors before all confidence in his abilities is eroded.

Over the course of the 2024-25 season, this happened with Andre Onana regularly making costly mistakes which cost Manchester United points.

Onana was poor in the Europa League final defeat and it is ultimately no shock that if possible, Ruben Amorim wants to upgrade this summer.

This has resulted in numerous goalkeepers being linked, with United said to have an interest in Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa as he looks to find a new club this summer.

Now though, there could be an opportunity in the market to sign a player who would be a tremendous upgrade on Onana.

Manchester United make approach to sign Gianluigi Donnarumma

Onana is thought to have suitors in Saudi Arabia this summer, and if he goes it would appear United have several goalkeepers on the shortlist to replace the Cameroonian.

Now, ESPN have claimed that one of the names is PSG’s Gianluigi Donnarumma. It was reported earlier this week that United had registered an interest in signing Donnarumma.

But ESPN’s report has pushed the story on with United thought to have enquired to his agent Enzo Raiola about a potential transfer, along with Inter Milan.

United view Donnarumma as a ‘great market opportunity’ with the Italian’s contract set to expire in 2026 and contract talks hitting snags. Despite this, Donnarumma has outlined his desire to stay in Paris.

PSG however have lined up Lucas Chevalier as a replacement, so in the event Donnarumma is departing, United are front of the queue.

United also tried to sign Donnarumma when he was 16 years old

Donnarumma is a “sensational” goalkeeper, as Khvicha Kvaratskhelia told GFFN earlier this year, and the Italy international is absolutely one of the best in the world.

However, this is not the first time that Donnarumma to United has become a hotly debated topic.

Going all the way back to 2015, when Donnarumma was just 16 and already a superstar for AC Milan, United were interested in signing the 6ft 5in goalkeeper.

His then agent Mino Raiola however told United that Donnarumma would be worth €170m, which is roughly £143m, according to The Independent. This rightfully put the Red Devils and the rest of Europe off as he waited to join PSG in 2021 for free.

The chances of United managing to sign Donnarumma are slim, however, it remains a possibility.
