Trevoh Chalobah instantly joins Gary Neville in exclusive club

Trevoh Chalobah’s first England appearance saw him join an impressively exclusive Three Lions club.

The Chelsea defender started their friendly against Senegal on Tuesday night, becoming the second player in his family to make an international appearance for England.

Chalobah joined brother Nathaniel in collecting his first Three Lions cap, making the pair only the third brotherly duo to both appear for the country.

Before them, Gary and Phil Neville achieved the feat which had only been done once before by Jack and Bobby Charlton.

However, the Chalobahs will almost certainly never catch the Nevilles or Charltons when it comes to appearances, as Nathaniel has only played a single minute for England.

A Chelsea academy graduate like his younger brother, he was a late substitute in a 3-2 Nations League win over Spain in 2018.

He came on for Harry Winks in the second minute of stoppage time with the game ending a minute later.

Nathaniel was playing for Watford at the time, and is now at Championship side Sheffield Wednesday playing at the age of 30.

Anyone playing for their country is still a brilliant achievement, though, and Trevoh clearly was inspired by his sibling.

He commented: "My older brother has been through the ranks as well and he was over the moon when I got the call up. Hopefully I can keep myself in the team and doing well.

"To get the call-up is amazing. It was one of my goals since playing through the ranks, from Under-16 to Under-21. It's a dream to play in the first team.

"To be back here with him [Thomas Tuchel], having been with him at Chelsea, and knowing who he is and how he works, is good."

Chalobah didn't get on during England's World Cup qualifying win over Andorra last weekend.

The match was a sluggish one from England with Harry Kane's strike early in the second half all that separated the two sides.

Chalobah played his best football under Tuchel at Stamford Bridge, making 31 appearances and scoring four goals under the new England manager.

He was part of the Blues’ Champions League winning squad in 2021, but hasn’t had such luck under Tuchel’s successors.

In fact, he was sent on loan to Crystal Palace at the start of the current campaign as Enzo Maresca trimmed his bloated squad.

Yet as injuries took their toll, he was recalled in January and made 19 appearances, which might put him in good stead for the next campaign.
