This week, the Dallas Cowboys are entering the most important phase of their offseason so far: Mandatory minicamp. Lately, all eyes have been on the veteran defensive end Micah Parsons.
As Parsons is searching for a new deal, his absence at OTAs last week was notable. Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer publicly made it clear that he was under the belief that Parsons would be present for the mandatory phase of the offseason. Parsons assured everybody that would be the case as well.
On Monday, the Cowboys saw Parsons show up and go through a physical, which was a positive first step to avoiding a potential holdout. On Tuesday, the team got another major update.
According to Jon Machota, Parsons is not only attending minicamp, but he will do on-field work. The veteran cornerback Trevon Diggs will also be around the team after being away for the voluntary phase of the offseason.
Being with the Cowboys since 2021, Parsons has taken a lot of pride in being a full participant in most of the team's activities and games over the years. Through his first three seasons with the Cowboys, Parsons started and played in 18 games. With Dallas making the playoffs in each of those years, he played all four postseason matchups as well.
The 2024 NFL season was the first time Parsons battled with a setback that would take him off the field. Early on in the season, he dealt with a high ankle sprain. He ended up missing four games in a row as a result. By the end of the year, Parsons had played in just 11 games. He finished the season with 43 tackles (12 for a loss) and 12 sacks.
At this point in his career, Parsons has racked up 256 tackles and 52.5 sacks. He's recognized as one of the most dominant pass rushers-not only in Dallas-but in the entire NFL. As a result, Parsons wants to lock in a long-term contract with the Cowboys to reflect that.
So far, Parsons and the Cowboys haven't been able to agree to a new deal. Fortunately, Parsons has handled the lack of discussions well, as he maintains a positive attitude and is showing up for his team as they look to bounce back in 2025.
The expectation is that the Cowboys will meet Parsons' demands at some point during the offseason. Right now, the pressure isn't turned up too high, as Parsons has not entered holdout territory.
The Cowboys will fire up their first minicamp session on Tuesday, June 10. The program is expected to conclude on June 12.
