Kyle Shanahan's latest injury updates allow 49ers fans to breathe easily

The San Francisco 49ers concluded their first day of mandatory minicamp on Tuesday, and arguably the best news of all is the fact there's no news.

Well, at least none that's concerning.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan addressed reporters after the practice session and delivered some notable updates on some of the Niners' injured players, particularly those who aren't able to participate until training camp or later.

In particular, wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, whose recovery from a torn ACL and MCL suffered last year is likely to cut into the regular season.

Aiyuk was seen doing some rehab work on the sidelines but didn't partake in any drills as he hasn't been cleared to practice yet, but Shanahan's update on the receiver is promising enough.

"He's making his way back," Shanahan said, via 95.7 The Game. "He's still in the middle of it, so he's working through that. He's been around. He's been rehabbing for the most part."

The head coach circled Aiyuk as one of San Francisco's players coming off ACL injuries who'd not be ready for training camp, which starts in late July. In addition to Aiyuk, the 49ers are expected to be without safety Malik Mustapha, linebacker Curtis Robinson and rookie quarterback Kurtis Rourke as they recover from their own respective ACL tears, as Shanahan also pointed out.

So, in simpler terms, nothing new or unexpected on those fronts. And that's OK.

One player not dealing with an ACL tear but nevertheless recovering from injury is second-year wide receiver Ricky Pearsall, who had a hamstring issue during organized team activities and wasn't able to participate during those voluntary practices.

According to Shanahan, Pearsall could have participated in mandatory minicamp, but the decision was made to be careful with the 2024 first-round draft choice and let him rest and recover until training camp.

Considering Aiyuk likely opens up 2025 on the physically unable-to-perform (PUP) list, Pearsall's role and importance has increased significantly.

Shanahan also shared rookie defensive end Mykel Williams is dealing with hamstring tightness, and like Pearsall, he could have kept practicing but will be rested until camp as a precaution.

The Niners wrap up their two-day minicamp on Wednesday, June 11.
