Newcastle United have been handed a potential boost in their reported pursuit of Chelsea winger Noni Madueke this summer.

The transfer window may have slammed shut, but with the second set to open in just six days, clubs are beginning to ramp up their business ahead of what promises to be a busy couple of months. It’s no secret the Magpies are eager to strengthen their attacking options, having already been linked with the likes of Bryan Mbeumo, Joao Pedro and Anthony Elanga.

A report from i News this week also noted that Newcastle are keeping a close eye on Madueke’s situation at Chelsea, in the event he becomes available. The 23-year-old was rumoured to have been discussed during recruitment meetings last summer, though Newcastle never formalised their interest. That could change this time around if they are unable to land alternative targets.

Madueke, who predominantly plays as a right winger, joined Chelsea from Dutch side PSV Eindhoven in January 2023. He has scored 20 goals and registered nine assists in 87 appearances for the Blues across all competitions.

However, Chelsea are undergoing something of an overhaul in their wide areas this summer. Jadon Sancho has returned to Manchester United following a loan spell, while the club’s pursuit of Borussia Dortmund’s Jamie Gittens suggests new head coach Enzo Maresca is seeking upgrades in those positions.

Gittens, 20, is poised to move to Stamford Bridge and can operate on either flank, although he typically plays on the left. Reports suggest Chelsea had hoped to wrap up a deal before Tuesday evening’s transfer deadline in order to register him for the Club World Cup, but a move did not materialise as Dortmund are holding out for a higher fee.

Chelsea are expected to continue their pursuit of Gittens when the second window opens on June 16, which could pave the way for someone like Madueke to leave the club. It has been suggested in some reports that up to 14 players, including Madueke, could be made available as the London club look to raise funds for further additions.
