‘Not expected’: Journalist dismisses speculations of Man United target joining rival club

Manchester United want to sign another forward who can play in the number 10 position after acquiring Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Manchester outfit are now targeting Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo, who had a stellar campaign in the Premier League last term, racking up 20 goals and eight assists.

The Bees rejected their first offer of £45 million plus £10m in add-ons, but they have tabled a second bid of over £60m for the Cameroon international.

Tottenham Hotspur have also been linked with the versatile forward but are yet to table an offer for him.

There are speculations that Tottenham could beat United to the signing of the 25-year-old due to the imminent appointment of Thomas Frank as their manager.

However, journalist Ben Jacobs has refuted the speculations, insisting that United are in pole position to sign the Cameroonian.

He told The United Stand: “Spurs, like other clubs, know of Bryan Mbeumo’s choice to join Man United. While you can never say never, it’s not expected that the expected arrival of Thomas Frank will influence this.”

Man United are likely to sign Mbeumo ahead of Spurs

Mbeumo has already decided to join United. The club just need to agree on a fee with Brentford for his signature.

Tottenham appear to have conceded defeat about signing Mbeumo as they have stepped up their interest in Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo.

United are also keen on signing the Cherries’ star but are unlikely to sign him and Mbeumo during this summer’s transfer window, given their financial situation.

The Brentford star’s wages demand also makes it difficult for Tottenham to complete a deal for him.

The Times claims he wants a weekly salary of £250,000, more than that of the North London side’s highest earner, Heung Min-Son, who earns £190,000.

By contrast, United offer substantial wages to players and would be ready to match Mbeumo’s demand.

The likely departures of Marcus Rashford, Antony, Jadon Sancho, and Alejandro Garnacho will also reduce United’s wage bill.

The reduction will help them to match the Cameroonian’s demands without the risk of breaching the Profit and Sustainability Rules.
