Tottenham backed to make a summer move for English star lighting up the Saudi Pro League

Incoming Tottenham boss Thomas Frank could advise the club to make an approach for Al-Ahli striker Ivan Toney

Tottenham Hotspur are now on the verge of appointing Thomas Frank as their new manager. The Europa League winners are set to announce the Brentford boss as Ange Postecoglou’s successor, with contract terms and staff appointments now agreed.

Spurs have had to pay a fee in the region of £10m to free up the Danish tactician from his contract at Brentford that runs until 2027. Simultaneously, the Hotspur Way chiefs are working behind the scenes to improve the squad following their entry into the Champions League next season.

Tottenham could do with attacking reinforcements this transfer window. Only one Spurs player managed to get into double digits in goals in the Premier League last season – Brennan Johnson. That will not be enough next term with competition for places set to increase and the addition of Champions League football. Plus, Son Heung-min is on the decline, and Richarlison just cannot stay fit for long periods.

Tottenham backed to make a summer move for English star lighting up the Saudi Pro League.

Ivan Toney was heavily linked with a move to Tottenham last year before he opted to join Saudi Pro League club Al-Ahli

If one of Son or Richarlison departs, it could open up space in the squad for the entry of a new forward. And ex-Spurs scout Bryan King thinks Thomas Frank could advise the club to make an approach for Al-Ahli striker Ivan Toney.

“I wouldn’t be surprised to see Tottenham move for Toney with Frank coming in. Obviously, the stumbling block will be the money, but apart from the money, it is hardly a high-quality league,” Bryan King exclusively told Tottenham News.

“He’s been included in the England squad, but playing in Saudi Arabia isn’t going to help his position with England with the World Cup coming up. Tottenham should have signed Toney last summer.”

Ivan Toney earned recognition as a clinical finisher at Brentford under Frank’s guidance. A Newcastle United reject, the Englishman earned a move to Brentford in 2020 after scoring a lot of goals for Peterborough United. Across two full Premier League seasons with the Bees, he netted 32 goals in 66 appearances.

Prospective Spurs boss Thomas Frank could make an approach to Ivan Toney over a move to North London

After an eight-month ban by FA for breaching betting rules, Toney returned to Brentford side but had minimal impact and was sold to Saudi side Al-Ahli last summer, where he netted 30 goals in 44 appearances across all competitions. At 29 and recalled into the England squad by head coach Thomas Tuchel, Toney would be an upgrade on the injury-prone Richarlison and give Tottenham a different edge in attack. Having worked with Frank before, he should ideally not face much fuss to adapt to his system at N17 too.
