The New York Knicks need a new head coach after firing two-time Coach of the Year Tom Thibodeau.
New York fired Thibodeau despite making the conference finals this year for the first time since 2000.
The Knicks are interested in Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd. The problem is that Kidd has two years left on his contract with the Mavericks, who are not expected to grant New York permission to speak to Kidd.
A Hall of Famer, Kidd played for the Knicks in 2012-13. He was a superstar with the New Jersey Nets and coached the Brooklyn Nets in 2013-14, so he's familiar with the New York market.

However, veteran NBA insider Marc Stein doesn’t think Kidd is looking to leave the Mavericks for the Knicks. Stein has covered the Dallas franchise for many years. He's a Hall of Famer with a firm pulse on the Mavericks franchise.
“I do not think he is looking to leave Dallas,” Stein said on the DLLS Mavs podcast. “He is very settled here. His family is very settled here. And he is very close with the two superstars (Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving) who are in place.”
Kidd has coached the Nets, Milwaukee Bucks and Mavericks. He has a record of 362-339 in the regular season and 31-33 in the playoffs.
Dallas made the NBA Finals last year, losing to the Boston Celtics in five games. Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in February. He targeted Davis in trade talks.
The Mavericks have the first overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. They are expected to draft Duke's Cooper Flagg.
Once Irving recovers from his left ACL tear, Dallas will have a "Big 4" of Irving, Davis, Flagg and Klay Thompson.
