Arsenal target Viktor Gyokeres is reportedly furious with the Sporting CP for attempting to renege on a previous agreement that would have allowed him to leave for €70 million this summer.

The 26-year-old Sweden international has been in prolific form since joining Sporting from Coventry City in 2023, quickly establishing himself as one of the most sought-after forwards in Europe. His stunning return of goals and assists last season made him a top target for clubs across the continent, including Arsenal and Manchester United.

While Arsenal initially explored a move for Gyokeres, they have shifted focus to Slovenian striker Benjamin Sesko, with talks ongoing to finalise a deal. This development has opened the door for Manchester United, who have recently stepped up their interest in the Swedish star.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the Red Devils have been in frequent contact with Gyokeres’ representatives, calling them “on a daily basis.” However, financial constraints at Old Trafford could complicate any potential deal, especially after fresh developments in Portugal.

Reports now suggest that Sporting CP are attempting to increase their asking price for the striker to €80 million, despite a previous gentleman’s agreement allowing him to leave for €70 million, including add-ons. Gyokeres has a €100 million release clause, but Sporting had reportedly committed to a lower figure as part of an internal agreement made last year.

According to Portuguese outlet Record, Sporting president Frederico Varandas and then-football director Hugo Viana had promised Gyokeres a €500,000 bonus if he reached a combined 50 goals and assists, while also assuring him that he could leave for a fee below his clause. The publication adds that Viana followed up the meeting with written and audio messages confirming the terms, communications now in possession of the striker’s agency, HCM.

HCM is reportedly considering releasing the messages publicly to prove Sporting’s commitment. A source close to the matter further claimed that no official bids have yet been received, but confirmed there was a clear understanding that the club would not insist on the full release clause due to Gyokeres’ age.

However, Sporting officials are now said to be backtracking, prompting tension between the player and the club. With the summer transfer window approaching, this standoff could escalate, potentially forcing the club’s hand or putting Gyokeres’ future in limbo.
