Manchester United’s goalkeeper department is set for a major shake-up this summer as all bets are off as to who will remain at Old Trafford at the start of next season.
Andre Onana has failed to provide the consistency and reliability needed for a first-choice keeper at Old Trafford. His routinely problematic performances and simple mistakes have unfortunately ranked him top for a pretty worrying stat this season.
Onana has lead to the pack in number of mistakes which have directly led to conceding a goal, which needless to say isn’t something Ruben Amorim will be feeling particularly confident over.
As a back-up, Altay Bayindir is looking to depart the club to get more first team football, failing to be given any real opportunities despite Onana’s questionable performances.
Then there’s Tom Heaton who was expected to hang up his gloves at the end of the season.
Interestingly however, the 39-year-old appeared in United’s retained list, indicating his extended stay at the club.
Now, The Sun has revealed that Heaton has verbally agree a new one-year deal to remain with The Red Devils as a player.
It’s been speculated that Heaton my in turn take on a coaching role at Carrington, however it’s now believed that’s on the cards for the long-term future rather than right now.
Despite coming through the youth academy in 2004 and leaving the club in 2010, Heaton failed to make a Premier League appearance, having stints with Swindon Town, Royal Antwerp, Cardiff, QPR, Rochdale and Wycombe before permanently moving to Cardiff.
After two years in the Welsh capital, Heaton crossed the river Severn to join Bristol City for a season before settling up North with Burnley in 2013.
Six years later, the former England international moved to Aston Villa for £7.5 million, in his first and only sale of his career, with all other moves being on free transfers.
Two years later in 2021, Tom Heaton returned home to Manchester United, taking up the role as the club’s third keeper.
Now, the veteran shot-stopper is set to remain with his academy side into his 40s, having only made three senior appearances for the side across his 23 years at Old Trafford.
