NFL Analyst Reveals Reasoning Behind Jaire Alexander's Release

With teams starting mini-camp this week, there's been a ton of coverage across all 32 teams.

The Green Bay Packers dropped a bomb on Monday morning, announcing the release of cornerback Jaire Alexander.

Alexander has been a key piece to the Packers' defense since being selected with the No. 18 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. He's accumulated 287 tackles and 12 interceptions in the seven seasons he played in Green Bay.

He's also a two-time Pro Bowler and was named to two Second-Team All-Pro teams in 2020 and 2022.

It seemed the Packers were ready to move on from him and released the 28-year-old after only playing in 14 total games in the past two seasons.

Now, Alexander will be in pursuit of joining a new team as he furthers his football career.

Peter Shrager explains the reasoning behind the Green Bay Packers' release of Jaire Alexander

The recent news was seen as very surprising, as Alexander was still under contract with the Packers through 2026 after signing a four-year, $84 million rookie extension in 2022.

As more news releases on the details behind the Packers cutting Alexander, ESPN analyst Peter Shrager explained why Green Bay pulled the plug on the cornerback.

"At the end of the day, Jaire Alexander didn't want to take a pay cut, and the Packers thought it was fair, after two years of him only playing so many games, that we talk about a contract restructure... He's [Jaire Alexander] going to bet on himself, and the Packers, they said, 'Well, we are not gonna bet on that,'" Shrager mentioned on The Pat McAfee Show.

Now, it's uncertain what Alexander's plan is moving forward, but it seems that he will go into free agency looking for a contract that will keep him as one of the top paid cornerbacks in the NFL.
