Green Bay Packers QB Jordan Love only had good words about Matthew Golden shortly after the team drafted him last April. He hasn’t met the guy at that time but already thought that he would do well in the pros.

“You always want to kind of connect with the quarterback when you give him some pieces, so I Facetimed him and he’s like, ‘Man, sub-4.3 … I gotta get that arm loose,’” head coach Matt LaFleur shared to The Athletic when asked about Love’s initial thoughts on them drafting the wide receiver.
The team have started organized team activities and that meant Love finally got a close up look at their 23rd pick whose arrival to the team came with so much fanfare since he is the first ever first round WR the team picked since 2002.
How does Love rate him now? His view was just confirmed.
“He’s been looking good,” Love said as quoted by Packers writer Matt Schneidman.
Matthew Golden, Green Bay Packers
Green Bay Packers wide receiver Matthew Golden (22) misses the ball during the team’s first day of minicamp on June 10, 2025, at Ray Nitschke Field in Ashwaubenon, Wis.
“I think from the get-go, from Day 1 when he got here, he’s showcased kinda just the versatility he has running routes, the speed he has and his ability to catch. I think for him, every day he’s been getting better just understanding what he needs to do.”
Matthew Golden needs to go through a process
There significant hype behind Golden but Love knows he is a project that needs to be developed. Good thing for the Texas Longhorns standout, he is surrounded with veterans who are willing to help him.
Even the existing WR with whom he will joust for the main spots are there to guide him.
As for Love, he advised his new teammate to remain consistent and be hungry in learning as he believes Golden can be a prominent part of the team.
Jordan Love, Green Bay Packers, packers news
Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love (10) throws a pass to Green Bay Packers wide receiver Romeo Doubs (87) during the first quarter of their game Sunday, September 29, 2024 at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
“You could tell the first couple days there might be a couple routes here and there where he just might be thinking a little bit too much out there and not just going out there and playing fast, which is expected for someone who just got here and is learning the whole offense and everything,” he continued.
“I think the faster he can pick up everything, which I think he’s been doing a great job of understanding where he needs to be and just knowing that, but obviously the more installs, the more offense we put in, it gets harder. The more he can stay locked in with all that, I think he’s definitely going to be a playmaker for us and excited to see how far he can go.”
The Packers will see Golden-Love connection in action on their first 2025 pre-season game against the New York Jets on August 9.
