According to reports from Italy, West Ham have fluffed their lines yet again in the transfer market—this time missing out on midfielder Yunus Musah after a two-year pursuit.
The story, first published by Calciomercato.com, suggests the Hammers entered the bidding far too late, allowing Napoli to swoop in and complete personal terms for the 23-year-old USA international. Whether the report is entirely accurate remains to be seen, but it has the all-too-familiar whiff of a classic West Ham blunder.
Musah—formerly of Arsenal’s academy and most recently at AC Milan—was a long-standing target identified during Tim Steidten’s early days at the club. The energetic, dynamic midfielder was seen as a much-needed injection of pace and drive in a West Ham side often accused of being flat-footed and lacking urgency.

The Hammers were first linked with Musah during his impressive spell at Valencia, with multiple reports (including our own at C&H) confirming scouting trips and firm interest. So if we’ve genuinely lost out because we moved too slowly, there’s simply no excuse.
Once again, fans are left wondering whether we’re asleep at the wheel while other clubs are already getting business done. Whether this is idle Italian speculation or a painful truth, one thing’s for sure: West Ham cannot afford to be left behind this summer.
Until deals are actually completed, the concerns will keep growing. And so will the frustration.
