Newcastle to offer surprise player + cash for Marc Guehi? – Crystal Palace open to deal

Newcastle’s 2024 summer transfer window was dominated by a long and ultimately unsuccessful pursuit for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

The England international was subject to multiple bids, but Palace and their Chairman Steve Parish proved to be too tough negotiators, much to the ire of Paul Mitchell and Newcastle.

But things have changed in 2025, and we look to return to the negotiating table with higher hopes of landing one of Eddie Howe’s top centre-back targets.

And according to one report, we could include a forgotten Mag in part of our bid to bring Guehi to Tyneside this summer…

A surprise player has emerged as a potential difference maker in our bid to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace this summer.

Matt Targett has been tipped to leave the club this summer, having fallen well down the pecking order at left-back since Lewis Hall’s emergence and Tino Livramento’s end of season form.

But, as [The Chronicle’s](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/marc-guehis-newcastle-united-transfer-31824359.amp) Andrew Musgrove highlights, the former Aston Villa defender could still have some use to Eddie Howe.

Crystal Palace, despite winning the FA Cup last month, are set to lose loanee Ben Chilwell back to Chelsea, and will need a backup for Tyrick Mitchell – which is where Targett could slot in perfectly.

Speaking on the Everything Is Black and White podcast, Musgrove said: “I’ve been told that Matt Targett could potentially hold the key. Now we know Targett is probably going to leave this summer, but interestingly, it has been said that he could move this deal along slightly because Ben Chilwell has gone back to Chelsea after he was on loan at Palace as back up to Tyrick Mitchell.

“Now they want another left back to provide that competition, but really back up to Mitchell, and maybe that could be ideal for both Newcastle and Matt Targett. It has been suggested that Palace would not be against the idea of taking Targett as part of a cash per player deal.”

Despite entering the final year of his contract with Crystal Palace, Guehi could still command a hefty transfer fee, with Palace demanding in excess of £65m last summer.

Given how ambitious we’re wanting to be this window, where a new goalkeeper, right winger and back-up striker is also wanted, the less money we have to spend on Guehi, the better.

Selling Matt Targett would also go a tremendous way to freeing up some wages in our current squad, with the 29-year-old reportedly collecting a hefty pay packet despite only playing 19 minutes of Premier League football this campaign.

The club will be wary of Crystal Palace’s antics last summer, although the Eagles don’t hold all the aces now Guehi’s contract is running down. If we get our man, they land a decent fee, plus a back-up left-back, all parties may be happy.
