Assessing the latest Premier League transfer rumours - with news from Arsenal, Fulham, Tottenham and more.
The summer transfer window has slammed shut… for the rest of the week before it re-opens until September and the rumour mill shows no signs of slowing down as this latest hit of news and gossip proves, starting with Arsenal looking to pinch Anthony Gordon from Newcastle.
It’s shaping up to be a blockbuster transfer window for the Gunners who are set to splash out almost £150 million on Benjamin Sesko and Martin Zubimendi to ignite their spluttering attack, but Mikel Arteta isn’t stopping there with Marc Guehi a potential target and left-wing reinforcements a must.
Newcastle want to hold onto as many of their key players as possible but Gordon falls behind the likes of Alexander Isak, Bruno Guimares and Tino Livramento in Eddie Howe’s priorities as the Magpies look to supercharge their pursuit of Guehi whilst balancing the books with Liverpool are also monitoring the 24-year-old.
Valued at £80m, Gordon would provide Newcastle with an almost 200% profit after buying him from Everton just over two years ago, and he’s immediately become Arteta’s first choice on the right flank to complement Bukayo Saka and provide service for Sesko.
Newcastle and Arsenal were the most one-sided teams in the league last season with 45% of the Magpies’ attacks coming down the left and 43% of the Gunners’ coming down the right per WhoScored, so there’s a clear need for Arteta to rebalance and those stats make Gordon the most obvious target.
The 3AM Verdict: The numbers speak for themselves -Gordon has flourished at St James’ Park after his transfer fee was ridiculed at the time, and he’d solve a lot Arsenal’s attacking problems in a heartbeat. Despite his Everton background, Gordon does have an allegiance to the Reds but their attack is looking congested enough already so the chance to walk into the starting XI at the Emirates could swing it.
Spurs eye electrifying Salzburg winger ahead of Frank arrival
“It’s just who we are, mate” Daniel Levy told Ange Postecoglou as he sacked him after winning the club’s first silverware in 17 years, and it didn’t take long for the chairman to find a more comfortingly trophyless manager as Thomas Frank received the ‘here we go’ from Fabrizio Romano yesterday morning.
Frank is expected to officially join the club later this week and Spurs could have his first signing nearly ready by the time he steps into his new office, in the form of blisteringly quick RB Salzburg winger Dorgeles Nene.
According to TEAMtalk, The Malian has attracted interest from Germany and Italy with Bayern Munich, Lazio, Fiorentina and Freiburg all chasing Nene but Tottenham have ‘exploded’ onto the scene flush with cash from their Champions League qualification.
The 22-year-old is absolutely electric with the ball at his feet, boasting a 71% take-on success rate that would but him in the top one percent of players in his position in Europe’s top five leagues, and he transferred that to the Champions League last season in an otherwise dismal continental campaign for Salzburg. Nene’s end product could use some improvement but his defensive appetite is impressive which will surely be a must for Frank, and Salzburg have priced such exciting raw materials at a manageable €20-25m (£17-£21m).
The 3AM Verdict: Nene could turn out to be one of the bargains of the summer if he can translate his formidable potential intoPremier League results and if not then he’ll retain some sell-on value from a relatively low price tag. No transfer is ever guaranteed to succeed but the risk-reward tradeoff in this deal seems generous towards the latter and Bayern Munich are the only other suitors who should realistically be able to cause Spurs problems.
Fulham could bring Premier League icon Palhinha back to Craven Cottage
Fulham are monitoring Joao Palhinha’s situation at Bayern Munich and could be prepared to offer the 29-year-old a move back to the Premier League, GIVEMESPORT report.
Marco Silva is set to enter his fifth season at the helm at Craven Cottage after being one of the candidates to replace Postecoglou, he was also linked with the vacant top job at Juventus and a lucrative move to lead Al-Hilal and Fulham’s top brass are keen to back Silva in the transfer market this summer to show there’s plenty of potential left in this partnership
They had the eighth-highest net spend in the Premier League last season but almost half of their £76.18m outlay was on Emile Smith Rowe, who failed to fire as a Cottager. This summer Fulham are targeting five marquee signings and Palhinha could be part of those plans after starting just six Bundesliga games this season.
Palhinha made 79 appearances for Silva at Fulham before the German giants signed him for an initial €51m (£43.2m) fee, but 12 months on he’s struggled to worm his way into Kompany’s plans despite travelling to the Club World Cup, and the London side are keen to see how much Bayern would need to reverse that deal.
The 3AM Verdict: It seems unlikely that Bayern will be willing to offer too much of a discount and the history of players returning to their former stomping grounds particularly in the Premier League is spotty at best. But Palhinha would instantly upgrade Fulham’s midfield and so many of the variables that allowed him to originally blossom onThameside are still in place, so this is exception worth pursuing for Silva if the price is right.
