Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi has been linked with a move to Arsenal this summer.
The 24-year-old, who helped the Eagles lift the FA Cup last month, has just one year remaining on his contract at Selhurst Park and, at the minute, there is no indication the Englishman is going to sign a new deal. According to The Athletic, the Gunners are interested in exploring a move for the defender, with Mikel Arteta keen to add another centre-back to his squad.
According to the report Arsenal made a significant effort to sign Dean Huijsen from Bournemouth, only for the Spanish international to choose Real Madrid, meaning Guehi is now back on their radar. The north Londoners were linked with the England international last summer but Palace were said to want around £70million back then, although that price may have decreased 12 months on due to Guehi's contract situation.
Arsenal are not alone in their interest, though, with Newcastle, Tottenham, Liverpool and Manchester United all keeping tabs on the player. Chelsea are due 20% of any future sale, after Guehi came through the youth ranks at Stamford Bridge, which is believed to have influenced the Eagles' hefty demands.
Interestingly, Guehi was asked about his future before Palace's FA Cup final win over Manchester City. Guehi said: "I think the most important thing is just always doing the best that I can for this football club. I come in every day and I try to be the same.
"I try to work hard. And you know, this football club has given me a lot. I'm still under contract at this football club, so my focus is always at this football club. So, you know, for me, the most important is just doing the best I can and seeing where the future holds.”
Palace chairman Steve Parish last year described the centre-back as a "superstar player" who will cost "superstar money". At the time Guehi said he was "humbled" by the praise and insisted he was very happy at the club.
"I am [happy]. It is good to be back here, to be playing again with team-mates and a (pre-season) run-out in front of some of the fans again, so it is all positive," Guehi told Sky Sports.
"I am humbled by that (Parish comments) - for someone who is a big part of this football club, for him to say something like that is amazing for someone like me. I am not sure I am a superstar, but it was some really kind words from the chairman."
The defender added: "There is a real culture of togetherness here, that is from the academy, the women's (team) and men - everyone is really on the same page, a real family. It is an amazing place to be. It is always important to focus on what is truly important and that is the game at the weekend, making sure that for the rest of the season, we are at it."
Guehi's future at Crystal Palace remains far from certain and it will be fascinating to see if Arsenal look to test the Eagles' resolve with a bid in the coming weeks and months. football.london understands Andrea Berta and Arteta are keen to sign a defender this summer but it remains to be seen if that player will be Guehi.
