Anthony Gordon slammed by national press as Newcastle United star now set for three-week break

Anthony Gordon played 58 minutes as England slumped to a 3-1 home defeat to Senegal.

Anthony Gordon came under fire last night as England were humbled 3-1 by Senegal at the City Ground.

England took an early lead when Gordon’s tame effort was parried into Harry Kane’s path. However, the Newcastle United ace blew a golden chance to fire the Three Lions into a two-goal lead on 28 minutes.

He was hooked on the hour mark with the scoreline at 1-1 and moments before the visitors went ahead. An embarrassing night was completed in stoppage time when Senegal put the game out of sight - becoming the first African nation to beat England.

Anthony Gordon’s return to Newcastle United

Gordon will now enjoy a three-week break following an up-and-down campaign for club and country. While the Magpies enjoyed their best season for a generation, the 24-year-old’s form was patchy.

He also missed the Carabao Cup final through suspension, although his two semi-final goals helped Newcastle reach the Wembley showdown. Newcastle players are set to return in the first week of July before jetting off to South Korea and Singapore for pre-season.

National media pan Gordon sitter

Nobody from the England team performed - or scored - favourably in the national press. The Daily Mail highlighted how Gordon “made a mess” of his effort that would have doubled the Three Lions’ advantage.

The Daily Express also noted Gordon’s “sitter” as a crucial England blunder that allowed Senegal back into the game. In fairness to the winger, the worst of the capitulation came after his withdrawal on 58 minutes.

“I felt like my style would suit his style of play, the way he was playing at Chelsea which was very exciting for me. It didn't end up happening.

"It was a big opportunity for me that didn't end up happening and I'm looking forward to getting to work with him a couple of years later."
