Former Southampton defensive target joins fallen Premier League giants

Southampton's previously shortlisted candidate Sean Roughan has joined fallen English giants Huddersfield Town.

At the turn of the decade, Southampton's all-time defensive great Maya Yoshida pulled the curtains on his storied St. Mary's career. Well, he still takes out time to revisit his old stomping grounds but it's no secret that the Saints have missed him massively on the pitch.

On top of that, Yoshida's exit marked a new Southampton era without all of their iconic rock-solid trinity including him, Jose Fonte and Virgil Van Dijk. Consequently, the backline needed fresh shuffling back then, and the Saints narrowed down to a shortlist consisting of Sean Roughan and Lyanco.

As pointed out by the Yorkshire Post, that was way back in 2021 and now, those choices will appear laughable to the Saints fanbase. That's because everyone knows how important Lyanco was in an ailing defensive unit while the former was always going to be a high risk young signing.

Saints dodged centre-back mistake by avoiding Roughan's signing

Expectedly, Sean took a while to find some form in the third-division which has now earned him a Huddersfield Town move.

Fair enough, wish him good luck there but still playing League One at the age of 22 is a sign of a failed wonderkid. Talking about his new team, Sean may pride himself on joining the three-time top-flight winners but he is clearly not at the talent-level Southampton demands.

Overall, the Saints dodged a transfer bullet but their Lyanco pick wasn't fully worth it at the end of the day. Why? Due to being super injury-prone, which often left Southampton's backline flaws exposed badly in the Premier League.

Considering these two events, the Saints will want Joshua Quarshie to start on a strong note and avoid any injuries or the need for a lower-division loan stint in the first place.
