'That's what I dream about': Christian Eriksen has already told Wrexham why he might not join…

Wrexham are ambitious as ever. But links to former Spurs, Inter, and Man United player Christian Eriksen might be somewhat over-ambitious.

Wrexham have every right to dream big after earning a third-straight promotion under owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, and manager Phil Parkinson, who last season guided the Dragons to a 2nd place finish in League One.

And Wrexham have a £25million transfer budget for this summer’s transfer window suggesting that they’re ready to spend big once more, in a bid to vie for what is currently an unthinkable fourth-straight promotion, which would land them in the Premier League.

But Parkinson will no doubt utilise the free agent market too, and one name mentioned of late is Christian Eriksen. Man United have released Eriksen after a three-year stint with the club and it’s claimed that Wrexham want to sign Eriksen on a free transfer this summer.

Wrexham are looking set for a midfield overhaul with other names like Tom Cairney, Tom Lawrence, and Lewis O’Brien also linked with moves to the Racecourse.

Wrexham transfer target Christian Eriksen dreams about playing at the highest level

Like every other player in the game, Eriksen wants to keep himself playing as high as possible. He’s played at a high level throughout his career and at 33 years old, he may still feel like he can cut it in the Premier League or in a top flight somewhere else. That would be bad news for Wrexham who would only be offering second tier football in England.

Speaking way back in 2017, Eriksen was discussing his links to Barcelona at the time. Eriksen has been linked on and off with Barca for several years now, even having links with the Catalan giants back in 2020. Previously, Eriksen said he’d find it hard to say no to Barcelona, whilst also outlining his dream of playing at the highest possible level, for as long as possible.

He said: “You can dream and hope the opportunity arises. But if it doesn’t, you can’t decide on it. Everyone dreams of the opportunity to move to clubs. Whether it ends with a yes or no, you choose that.”

Eriksen added: “Barcelona are a great club. I don’t think there are many who say no to Barcelona. In the future I see myself at the highest level. That’s what I dream about.”

Wrexham may have already priced themselves out of a deal for Christian Eriksen

Eriksen to Wrexham certainly sounds unlikely. But it’s not: Wrexham are an extremely attractive club to play for and one that would offer Eriksen something completely different to anything he’s ever experienced.

But Eriksen will surely weigh up all of his options before coming to a decision. And for the Dragons, a move is unlikely because of one thing: money. It’s reported that Wrexham will offer players huge wages this summer, even going up to £30,000-a-week. But Eriksen will no doubt want much more than that, if possible.

Despite previous reports that Wrexham have offered Cairney a contract worth £50,000-a-week, it seems like Reynolds and McElhenney are setting the bar at £30,000-a-week, which is still huge for a team in the Championship, but likely not enough to tempt someone like Eriksen into signing.

That, combined with his long-standing ambition to play at the top, makes a move seem highly unlikely.
