‘The reason’ - David Beckham singles out key trait from former Man Utd-linked manager that could begin to emerge for Ruben Amorim

Manchester United and England legend David Beckham has highlighted a certain quality from one manager that Ruben Amorim could begin to show at Old Trafford in the long term.

Ruben Amorim became the sixth permanent Manchester United manager last November after he left Portuguese side Sporting CP and arrived at Old Trafford.

The 40-year-old former Sporting CP head coach replaced Erik ten Hag at the Premier League club after his United predecessor was sacked by the Red Devils.

Amorim has faced an uphill battle so far at Old Trafford and the United head coach oversaw the Red Devils’ 15th-place finish in the Premier League table last season.

The Portuguese coach also fell short of lifting his first piece of major silverware as Red Devils boss after United lost 1-0 to Tottenham in the 2025 Europa League final.

Amorim is now expected to make the first significant changes to the United first-team squad that he inherited from Erik ten Hag in the summer transfer window.

David Beckham’s admiration for one Sir Gareth Southgate trait for England could manifest at Man Utd under Ruben Amorim

Sir Gareth Southgate has been out of the managerial dugout since last summer after he failed to lead England to the Henri Delaunay trophy at Euro 2024 in Germany.

The 54-year-old ex-Middlesbrough boss oversaw England’s run to the final of Euro 2024 and the Three Lions fell short to Spain in a 2-1 defeat at the Olympiastadion.

Following England’s defeat in Berlin, Sir Gareth Southgate left his role with the Three Lions and he was linked with Manchester United last summer.

Southgate later received a knighthood after he was named in the 2024 New Year Honours list, despite not winning any major silverware during his reign as England manager.

David Beckham, who played alongside Southgate for England, singled out the ‘trust’ that the ex-Three Lions boss was able to build with his players for his country.

“I love the fact that Gareth came through the system and the reason why this team has done so well under him is because he had them from a young age – under 21,” he said on his CBS programme, as per The Daily Mail.

“They trusted him, they loved the way he worked.

“They loved his gentle approach to management and the fact that he was able to bring the nation back on side at a tough time.

“He got knighted recently and he deserves that because of what he did for our country and what he did for our national team and what he did for our fans.

“Because our fans, in my opinion, are the best in the world.”

Why David Beckham’s observation of ‘trust’ in Sir Gareth Southgate and England could be replicated by Ruben Amorim at Man Utd

Ruben Amorim won’t be able to do the exact same as Sir Gareth Southgate by going through the ‘system,’ but the Sporting CP boss needs ‘trust’ from his United players.

The Red Devils coach wasn’t afraid to make sweeping changes after his arrival at Old Trafford, including Amorim rolling out his tactical system for United.

Southgate might not have won a single piece of silverware with England, but he was often praised for the camaraderie that he built with the Three Lions national team.

England’s rapport did allow the Three Lions to make progress in major tournaments under Southgate, including reaching the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup.

Simply put, Amorim needs time to put his long-term project in place over a period of time and for the trust to be built with the players that become part of his squad.

Amorim has been the first to admit that United should expect short-term pain before seeing long-term results and he needs that same time as Southgate had in his role.
