Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres has already indicated that Manchester United is an attractive destination with his reaction to Ruben Amorim's move. Amorim walked away from his dominant reign as Sporting boss to replace Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford last November, despite wanting to delay the switch until the summer.
The Portuguese head coach lifted five trophies in four years at the Jose Alvalade Stadium, including two league titles. He also sent Sporting on their way to their latest crown last season by overseeing an unstoppable start to the campaign. Amorim found United's approach impossible to turn down, though, leaving Lisbon to inherit a football giant in disarray and accept the months of hurt that followed.
Gyokeres has, naturally, been tipped to follow the 40-year-old to Manchester since amid the Red Devils' goalscoring woes.
Amorim brought him to Sporting from Coventry City in 2023, striking a fruitful relationship that established his reputation as one of Europe's most lethal strikers.
Gyokeres has scored 97 goals and registered 28 assists in 102 appearances for Sporting, and he now appears destined to depart for a new challenge this summer.
With Arsenal reportedly focusing on RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, links to a potential United switch are growing.
And Gyokeres has previously made no secret of his admiration for United by publicly admitting he understood Amorim's decision to leave his winning machine in Lisbon.
"Of course, it was something that we, as a group of players, didn't want," Gyokeres explained in May.
"Obviously, like you said, we were flying and winning every game in the league and doing well in the Champions League, too.
"It was a sad moment, but we totally understood his decision and there were no hard feelings. We spoke to him. Everything was very clear, and there were no hard feelings."
United's move for Gyokeres would depend on the club's ability to offload players once the summer transfer window re-opens on Monday.
Amorim has used his initial budget to sign Matheus Cunha from Wolves in a £62.5million deal and target Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo, who will demand a similar fee.
The United boss reportedly plans to complete an attacking overhaul with a new striker, though, and a reunion with Gyokeres will undoubtedly carry appeal.
No Champions League football, or any European football, on offer at Old Trafford next season isn't believed to have ended United's hopes of signing the prolific Swede.
