Primary school students celebrate Chapman's legacy

To mark the 100th anniversary of the legendary Herbert Chapman joining Arsenal Football Club, we hosted a special workshop for primary school students to learn about the lasting impact of our legendary and pioneering manager.

Children from Tufnell Park, Ambler, and Shacklewell primary schools took part in the event, which was led by our Inclusion Manager, Samir Singh. The session began with a reading of the children’s book Herbert Chapman: Little Legends of Football, which provides an accessible summary of Chapman’s remarkable life and career.

Following the story, Samir gave an engaging presentation highlighting the many traditions and innovations Chapman introduced to football. These included the use of white footballs, the addition of players’ names on the back of shirts, and the practice of both teams walking out together at FA Cup Finals - a tradition that began in 1930 and continues today.

The children then visited the Herbert Chapman statue located by the Danny Fiszman Bridge, followed by a trip to the Arsenal Museum, where a dedicated section celebrates his achievements and contributions.

This workshop was a memorable opportunity for the next generation to connect with the rich history of Arsenal and appreciate the visionary who helped transform the club into the institution it is today.

One unique piece of history the students learned is that Arsenal is the only London football club to have an Underground station named after it which is a testament to Chapman’s lasting impact on the club and the city.

Herbert Chapman’s appointment in 1925 was a turning point for Arsenal, shaping the club’s identity for decades to come. During his tenure from 1925 to 1933, Chapman led the team to two First Division league titles, one FA Cup victory, and three Charity Shields.
