By all accounts, Newcastle United are in the healthiest financial state they’ve been in years.

With some freedom to spend in accordance with PSR, and our top stars committed to the club moving forward, it’s perhaps never been more exciting to be a Newcastle fan than right now, ev

However, there’s always room for improvement. And in regards to the club’s finances and transfer budget, extra measures could be taken by the club to back Eddie Howe in the best possible way.

According to a new report, two core members of our senior squad could be sold to allow for additional spending this summer, even if Eddie Howe is reluctant to see both leave…

According to [The Athletic](https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6413081/2025/06/10/arsenal-transfer-latest-news-manchester-united-liverpool-chelsea-barcelona-real-madrid/?s), Newcastle could be tempted to sell Harvey Barnes and Joe Willock to further fund their transfer plans this summer.

It’s believed Howe would ‘ideally’ like to keep both, but the club may consider decent offers should it raise additional funds to be reinvested, as North East reporter Chris Waugh writes in his latest Transfer DealSheet piece.

Joe Willock has dropped down the midfield hierarchy this season, struggling for form after battling with injuries and confidence levels on the pitch. Crystal Palace and Fulham have both been linked over the past month, offering him a potential return to London.

Harvey Barnes is a potential surprise name to ponder selling, however, as he’s been in far better form than Anthony Gordon for the final few months of the season, with the latter struggling to reach anything like his top levels since returning from a hip injury.

A potential sale to Aston Villa, with a player like Jacob Ramsey coming the other way, has been briefly mentioned in the press, but nothing concrete so far on Barnes departing.

Newcastle are by no means a club who are facing pressure to sell their star players: if anything, selling potential starters like Barnes should be a no-go considering how many games we will have to play next season.

However, should we get close to what we originally paid for Barnes and Willock this summer, you would be talking close to £60m, which would help out our summer transfer plans immensely.

We know that the likes of James Trafford, Marc Guehi, Joao Pedro and Anthony Elanga won’t be cheap, but with how much Howe values Barnes in particular, would it be worth sacrificing one winger to bring in another like Elanga?

Furthermore, if we were to negotiate further with Unai Emery’s Villa and sell Barnes to a direct European rival, then that could prove to be a mistake not worth the bonus PSR freedom? Perhaps, although it could work to our benefit if a favourable deal can be agreed, much like Nottingham Forest negotiated last summer to land Elliot Anderson.
