Manchester United announcement hints at one transfer this summer

Andre Onana, Altay Bayindir and Tom Heaton run out onto the San Mames Stadium pitch to warm up ahead of the Europa League final.

The goalkeeping department could welcome a new face this summer.

Manchester United issued their end-of-season retained list on Monday, confirming they are locked in talks with veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton over a new contract.

The vastly experienced shot-stopper, 39, had been weighing up his future with his existing deal due to expire at the end of this month, but United's decision to attempt to retain him means he could remain at Old Trafford beyond his 40th birthday.

Despite not making a competitive appearance for United in more than two years, Heaton remains a valued member of the dressing room. It is understood he is open to staying at the club for another year.

The former Burnley and Cardiff City goalkeeper returned to United for a second spell in July 2021, signing a two-year contract. At that juncture, he joined a goalkeeping pool that already consisted of David de Gea, Dean Henderson and Lee Grant.

Since then, the landscape of United's goalkeeping department has changed somewhat, but Heaton has remained an ever-present figure within it. He is a popular member of the squad and has been part of the leadership group.

During Heaton's second stint at the club, De Gea has been replaced by Andre Onana as United's No.1 and Altay Bayindir has occupied second place in the pecking order since arriving from Fenerbahce at the end of the 2023 summer transfer window.

Despite having their respective moments in the spotlight, neither of them have been convincing enough to retain their roles without any questions being asked of them.

That is why United, as reported by the Manchester Evening News back in January, are expected to try and recruit a new goalkeeper this summer.

Head coach Ruben Amorim wants to sign a goalkeeper who can challenge and push Onana for the No.1 spot.

Despite Bayindir's penalty shootout heroics against Arsenal in the FA Cup third round back in January, he attracted criticism for some of his other performances, particularly after United's 4-3 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup.

With a new goalkeeper on Amorim's wish list, and Heaton in discussions over extending his Old Trafford stay by a further year, it suggests United may attempt to cash-in on Bayindir this summer to generate funds and create room for a new goalkeeper to come in and challenge Onana.

United are unlikely to have opened talks with Heaton over a new deal with the intention of demoting him to fourth in the goalkeeping pecking order.

Furthermore, with the start of the 2026 World Cup now exactly a year away, Bayindir may be keen to leave Old Trafford in the hope of securing regular first-team football to boost his chances of being Turkey's starting goalkeeper at next summer's tournament.
