Town's Championship rivals unveil new boss after dodging relegation

The Tigers avoided relegation on the final day of last season, with their draw against Portsmouth enough to secure safety and send Luton Town down to League One with a defeat at West Brom.

Despite that, boss Ruben Selles - who was only appointed in early December - was sacked in mid-May, disappointing many supporters who were hoping for consistency after a tumultuous year.

Owner Acun Ilicali has now found his man, choosing Jakirovic to take over at the MKM Stadium.

The 48-year-old boasts a playing career that lasted more than 20 years, playing as a towering centre-back at numerous different clubs.

This will be the eighth job of his eight-year management career, having spent time at Maribor, Rijeka and most recently Kayserispor. He has also won league titles with Bosnian outfit Zrinjski Mostar and Croatian giants Dinamo Zagreb.

This will be his first step into English football, having never played or managed in the country.

Jakirovic is the fifth Championship managerial appointment of the summer following Liam Manning (Norwich City), Ryan Mason (West Brom), Paulo Pezzolano (Watford) and Will Still (Southampton). There are vacancies at both Bristol City and Middlesbrough.

The fixtures for the 2025/26 campaign will be announced on Thursday, June 26th (12pm).
