'Failing to launch': National media point finger at Newcastle United's Anthony Gordon as…

· 11 June 2025, 11:30

**The Thomas Tuchel era at England is not off to the best of starts. Despite having won three out of four games, the performances have been less than convincing, and the opposition haven't exactly been testing.**

Last night, England suffered their first ever defeat to an African nation as Senegal came back from 1-0 down to win 3-1, causing many questions to be asked of the German manager already.

Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon was handed a start by the German, but his night lasted less than an hour.

Despite having a hand in Harry Kane's seventh-minute opener, Gordon came under fire in the national media as his indifferent club form spilled over into his international game.

Anthony Gordon continued his poor club form with the Three Lions

Anthony Gordon hasn't had the greatest of seasons with Newcastle United, coming off the back of an outstanding campaign in 2023/24, and whatever it is that's plaguing him continued to do so last night at Nottingham Forest's City Ground.

[The Sun](https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/35350832/england-player-ratings-walker-eze-madueke-senegal/) handed Gordon a rating of 5/10, pointing out how his international career is not taking off.

> “Gordon’s international career has been a perplexing one, looking like it could explode at times but ultimately failing to launch so far. This was his 12th cap and there were hints of what he can bring with his rapid pace and enthusiastic pressing.

>

> “But he was not clinical enough in front of goal, missing a sitter midway through the first half, once again leaving fans wondering if he has the genuine quality to shine at this level.”

Anthony Gordon needs a good rest and to take a long, hard look at himself

Anthony Gordon's missed sitter got a mention in the Daily Mail and The Daily Express.

The Mail gave Gordon another 5/10, pointing towards that poor finish in their review.

> “Key to Kane scoring his opener, but made a mess of his own tap-in which would have made it 2-0.”

Meanwhile, The Express weren't as cruel with their rating, but once again, they mentioned his glaring miss.

> “A few bright moments early on, and it was his shot which rebounded into the path of Kane for England’s opener. Gordon did, however, miss a sitter from a superb Walker cross.”

Let's hope that Gordon gets plenty of rest between now and his return to the club, and more importantly, gets his head on straight because he's been playing like he's distracted all season, and we can't have that again next season.
