West Ham have expressed their interest in a move for Liverpool midfielder Tyler Morton this summer.

The Hammers are keen to bolster Graham Potter’s options in midfield, with Jacob Ramsey also among the players linked with a move to the London Stadium.

Midfield is among several areas of the pitch needing to be strengthened by decision-makers at West Ham in the coming weeks.

A new goalkeeper is also being targeted, with talks ongoing for both Leicester City’s Mads Hermansen and Botafogo’s John Victor.

Morton close to joining Lyon from Liverpool

Morton made his breakthrough into the Liverpool first team during the 2021/22 season, making appearances in the UEFA Champions League and the Premier League for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The midfielder was loaned out to Blackburn Rovers for the following season and enjoyed a fruitful time in the Championship, making 40 appearances and earning a return to the league for the 2023/24 season with Hull City.

There, Morton thrived, scoring three goals and providing five assists as the Tigers narrowly missed out on the play-off spots.

But the 22-year-old stayed at Anfield last season and endured a frustrating campaign, making just five senior appearances whilst also dealing with a shoulder injury.

As a result, Morton is now keen to leave the Reds in search of consistent senior minutes, and West Ham looked to be an ideal option.

The Hammers were reportedly keen on a deal that would see fellow Liverpool youngster Harvey Elliott also arrive, with Potter keen to add quality to his midfield.

But decision-makers at The London Stadium appear to have missed the boat on one of their targets, with Morton now close to sealing a move to Ligue 1 side Lyon.

According to The Athletic (1 August), the French side are on the verge of an agreement worth around £15million for the England Under-21 national, with a medical expected soon.

West Ham can prioritise Freddie Potts

Much of the reason West Ham have neglected to push for Morton is likely due to the emergence of Freddie Potts.

The 21-year-old plays in a similar position and has massively impressed in pre-season thus far.

Potts spent last season in the Championship with Portsmouth, where he became a key midfielder for John Mousinho’s side, missing just six league games.
