Bryan Mbeumo speaks out after Newcastle United transfer chase - 'wanted to hear the projects'

Former Newcastle United target Bryan Mbeumo has spoken out about the options he snubbed this summer before choosing to join Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United revolution.

The former Brentford flyer netted 20 Premier League goals last term, adding to an already large number of high-level suitors keen to buy him in recent years.

Newcastle were certainly one of those clubs who had long admired the Cameroonian but the north east outfit were never able to get a deal done for the wide man, despite short-lived talks earlier in the summer.

Back in June, Chronicle Live reported Newcastle were unable to meet Mbeumo’s lofty wage demands, with the attacker wanting £200,00-per-week upon arriving at St James' Park. Sums of that nature represented a 300% increase for the player, with the Magpies unwilling to break their current, rigid wage structure to get a deal of that magnitude done.

In the end, the Red Devils had a free run at one of the signings of the summer as they got a £70m deal over the line earlier this month.

“I spoke to some other managers because I wanted to hear their projects,” Mbeumo told reporters this week. “But the Manchester United one was very good for me.

“[Manchester] United is a big club. It’s a great opportunity and I chose the project. I'm someone who likes a challenge. There is a very good project here and I wanted to be a part of it.

“I always trust my people around me. The transfer window can be long, it can be short. So you have to be patient and just try to keep thinking positively about things."

Newcastle moved quickly to ensure they found a suitable replacement for the wide man, pouncing on Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga in a deal worth £52m plus add-ons.

The Swede has already hit the ground running on Tyneside, netting in his second game for the club over the weekend against Arsenal.
