Newcastle United rocked by fresh injury blow 7 days before Premier League season

Newcastle United feared the worst when Joe Willock was stretchered off in midweek.

Eddie Howe has confirmed Joe Willock will be out for up to six weeks after suffering a calf injury.

Newcastle United feared the worst when the midfielder was stretchered off in stoppage time during the 1-0 defeat to K-League XI in midweek. Willock has endured several long-term absences in recent seasons.

The noises that followed the game remained positive despite the 25-year-old being forcibly withdrawn. Given the threadbare nature of Newcastle’s squad, any lengthy setback would deal a huge blow ahead of the Premier League opener.

Eddie Howe on Joe Willock injury

Speaking before the pre-season clash with Tottenham Hotspur, Howe told the club website yesterday: "We initially feared he could have injured part of his Achilles, but thankfully that wasn't the case. But it looks like he's got a problem with a muscle in the calf.

"So we feel the injury isn't as serious as maybe first feared, which is great news for Joe, but it's still going to keep him out for a number of weeks. How many we're not sure, but early diagnosis is looking four to six, which, although being a blow, is probably much better than the initial thought. So some positive news on Joe Willock."

Newcastle United timeline now confirmed

Howe has now given a six-week timeline on the injury while speaking to reporters this morning. While still bad news, the situation could have been a lot worse for Willock.

That leaves just Joelinton, Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Lewis Miley as the only available midfield options after Sean Longstaff was sold earlier in the window. Newcastle are already pushing for deals in other positions but there has been little speculation regarding the engine room.
