Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp described Benjamin Sesko as a "ridiculous" talent with an "incredible skillset" before Newcastle United made an opening offer for the forward over the weekend.
The Carabao Cup winners made an opening offer for the 22-year-old Slovenia international on Saturday as they look to beat Premier League rivals Manchester United to the signing of the RB Leipzig forward.
The Chronicle understands that the Magpies' offer is in the region of £65.5m for Sesko, as Eddie Howe looks to add to his squad ahead of the new Premier League season.
Since signing with the Red Bull model in 2019, Sesko has earmarked himself as one of the brightest up-and-coming forwards in the game.
In 2023, after four years at Red Bull Salzburg, Sesko signed for Bundesliga side RB Leipzig in a deal worth roughly £20m.
Since moving to Germany, the 22-year-old has scored 27 goals in 64 appearances in the Bundesliga, which has seen him routinely linked with moves to Manchester United, Arsenal, and Newcastle.
However, it appears that it is the Magpies who are now in pole position to sign the forward after tabling a formal offer on Saturday.
And if the words of former Liverpool manager Klopp, now Red Bull's head of global soccer, are anything to go by, then the Magpies could have quite a talent on their hands.
Speaking about Sesko in January, the 58-year-old said: "I’ve actually known him for a while, I knew him already when he was at Salzburg. I think we played a friendly game here when he was very, very young.
"I was really impressed, I thought: 'Where do they get all these players? Ridiculous.’
"I have no plans with him, just to make that clear. Don’t get it wrong, I will not show up in training and tell them what to do.
"Our plan, and I don’t have to ask Marco Rose what his plan is with him [Sesko], I know it… he wants to help him score as many goals as possible.
"He has space for improvement, space for development, incredible skillset, incredible potential, so I’m happy that we have him."
