Manchester United have a battle on their hands to sign RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko.

As The Manchester Evening News reported earlier this week, United are advancing on a deal to sign the Slovenia international before the transfer window slams shut. United have been in the market for a new centre forward all summer, with Sesko now their priority target.

The problem United have is that Newcastle are also in the running to snap-up Sesko this summer. Various reports have claimed that the Magpies have made an opening bid worth €80million (£70million) including add-ons.

United are still understood to be in the running to sign Sesko, with the striker's decision to be confirmed. If United were to agree a deal for the RB Leipzig star, they would have the perfect welcome gift on offer.

As is often the case when United confirm a new signing, they are soon given a squad number that they will wear during their time at Old Trafford. Matheus Cunha was awarded the No.10 shirt after his arrival from Wolves - while Bryan Mbeumo will wear the No.19 shirt following his move from Brentford.

Sesko currently wears the No.30 shirt for RB Leipzig - as has been the case since his arrival in 2023. However, that number is currently occupied by summer signing Diego Leon, so will not be available to Sesko.

However, another number from Sesko's past is available for him, or other new players, at United. The striker wore the No.29 shirt when he was with Red Bull Salzburg's academy set-up, and has also been available at United since Aaron Wan-Bissaka's move to West Ham last year.

Sesko has previously worn the No.21 shirt earlier in his career, but that number is currently occupied by Antony - amid uncertainty over his future. It's possible, though, that No.21 becomes available to new signings with Antony being inked-in for an exit from Old Trafford this summer.
