West Ham wonderkid gets new role | ‘Potter’s style’ unfolds

It’s an ill wind that blows nobody any good: Crysencio Summerville’s prolonged absence following hamstring surgery is just beginning to have an impact on the opportunity afforded to West Ham youngster Luis Guilherme. Helped by [Mohammed Kudus](https://www.claretandhugh.info/mohammed-kudus-demands-that-killed-the-deal-with-chelsea-report/)‘ departure, the young Brazilian has found himself thrust forward and used to fill the situation vacant which has arisen on West Ham’s flanks in the absence of both the Ghanaian and Dutch players.

And it seems as if he has found himself a home as a wingback in Graham Potter’s emerging vision of how he sees West Ham performing. As he told [whufc.com](https://www.whufc.com/news/luis-guilherme-im-very-happy-opportunity-coach-giving-me), the 19 year old Brazilian is revelling in the game time he’s finally getting after a very frustrating first season at London Stadium:

_“I’m very happy to be helping the team in some way. We’re getting better and better. Once again, I’m very happy with the victory….._

_I’m very happy with the opportunity the coach is giving me. I’m getting better and better, feeling better and better on the field. Once again, I hope I can help the team in some way. I’m very happy for the opportunity.”_

Used in the ‘States at both right and most recently left wing back, Guilherme has had increasing match time: It does seem that Potters style will suit the speedsters Summerville, Guilherme, Diouff and Walker Peters who can thrive in a wing back system.

Pace was the biggest asset lacking last year and finally it seems that Graham Potter is turning – in some areas- to his youngsters instead of the same old, same old tired journeymen (ahem – aware of how ironic that sounds on a day it has been made public that we’ve signed Callum Wilson!)

Like Summerville, Guilherme will seem almost like a new signing from the dearth of match time he got last season. One of the many points of interest tomorrow, as West Ham seek another victory against Bournemouth in the Premier League summer series which finally kicks off  at a time when Hammers fans might stir themselves to watch.
