Wolves dealt Nelson Semedo replacement blow as defender is contacted by Everton

Another day, another Wolves target being lured away. This time Everton are swooping in for a right-back target.

Wolves have been busy recruiting in the defensive areas this week, talking to several clubs with the hopes of strengthening at the back as pre-season winds down.

Left-back David Moller Wolfe was announced as a Wolves player, and there has been contact with two other defenders, Robert Renan and Juanlu Sanchez.

While it’s great to see Wolves so active in the market, it exposes fans to the pain of having that target snapped up, as was the case with Atletico Madrid’s hijacking of Marc Pubill.

And that may well happen again, as Everton have made an enquiry for one of those targets.

Everton enquire about Wolves target Juanlu Sanchez

Wolves have been progressing with a Juanlu Sanchez deal, said by Marca to be ahead of Napoli in the race for the Sevilla right-back.

But on Saturday afternoon, Mateo Moretto reports Everton have joined the pursuit for what would be a perfect Nelson Semedo replacement.

MORE WOLVES STORIES

Having been scorned by a Spanish right-back already this window, Wolves will no doubt look to step up their negotiations and attempt to finalise a deal before talks with Everton can progress too much.

Everton are equally in need of strengthening in that position. James O’Brien featured heavily in that position last season in the absence of an available natural right-back. Seamus Coleman is past his best and Nathan Patterson has failed to establish himself there.

Wolves desperately need a right-back with Nelson Semedo gone

Vitor Pereira has many squad concerns following the mass exodus from Molineux this summer. He has addressed the left-back vacancy, but the opposite flank is in need of reinforcement.

Last season’s captain, Nelson Semedo was integral to Wolves’ defence, and his absence will be sorely felt. Wolves think Rodrigo Gomes is better suited upfield.

Ki-Jana Hoever has made a comeback, performing well this pre-season, but perhaps is not ready for a starting role. Pedro Lima has caused concerns amongst fans who see him as needing more time out on loan.

All that means there are high stakes in this pursuit of Sanchez, and Wolves need to ensure they stay ahead of the Toffees and progress to a deal soon.
