Isaac Hayden spent nine years under contract at Newcastle United but last made an appearance in December 2021.
Newcastle United have announced Isaac Hayden’s departure as a free agent with immediate effect.
Toon fans could be forgiven for thinking the midfielder had already left the club. Hayden last played for Newcastle during the 4-0 home defeat to Manchester City in December 2021.
A lucrative contract penned just one year before the Saudi-backed takeover has made the 30-year-old - once viewed as an important player at St James’ Park - hard to shift. Several loan spells in the lower leagues have not encouraged a permanent transfer.
Newcastle have now released a statement confirming that Hayden is no longer on the books. A mutual agreement has been reached and the 2017 promotion-winner is now free to find another club.

Newcastle United statement
“Newcastle United midfielder Isaac Hayden has departed the club as a free agent,” a club statement read. “The 30-year-old joined the Magpies in 2016 after starting his professional career with Arsenal and, during his time at St. James' Park, the midfielder made 171 appearances for the club in all competitions.
“Most recently, he spent the second half of the 2024-25 season on loan with Championship side Portsmouth after spells with Standard Liège and Queens Park Rangers during the last campaign. Everyone at the club thanks Isaac for his efforts while with Newcastle United and wishes him well for the future.”
Isaac Hayden on Portsmouth situation
Hayden opened up about his success while on loan at Portsmouth earlier this year. He said: “When I came to the club initially, it was a ‘you help me and I’ll help you' situation. I don’t think there’s anything more than that,
“I think financially it’s a little bit of a difficult conversation and also when I spoke to people at the end of January when I signed, the situation was the club want to go in a younger direction. I don’t think they want to go with players who are my age and above.
“So it’s one of those where they gave me the games and the platform to play, I’ve played, done well and we’ve stayed up - everyone’s a winner. I knew already for a while it was going to be a situation like that, and they were the circumstances I was coming here under.
“I’m now go into a situation off the back of some games, some good games, and I can now go into the summer and international football in a good space.”
