Everton are now in a fierce battle with a Premier League rival to secure the signature of an exciting midfield target.
Competing against other Premier League sides for players has been the story of Everton’s summer in the transfer market.
David Moyes is expecting movement in the market ahead of the curtain raiser against Leeds United at Elland Road.
The 62-year-old manager has voiced his concerns, with Moyes wanting nine signings made at Everton before the window closes.
A huge ask for Angus Kinnear, who will be well aware of the enormous job he has taken on after leaving Leeds.
Ironically, it is the Yorkshire side that Everton find themselves in battle with over one specific midfielder.

Everton battling Leeds United for Josh Brownhill
Everton are open to signing two new midfielders before the close of play on 1 September.
One attack-minded midfielder has already been added to the squad permanently after Carlos Alcaraz was added from Flamengo following his loan deal.
MORE EVERTON STORIES
According to GiveMeSport, Everton are now looking to add another with Josh Brownhill of interest following his Burnley exit.
Brownhill recently announced he’d be available as a free agent, and that has caught the attention of the Toffees.
Everton now find themselves trying to convince the 29-year-old to make the move to the Hill Dickinson Stadium, with Leeds United also keen to land the midfielder.
Brownhill has admitted he wants a Premier League move this summer, despite Burnley’s return to the top flight.
The report claims Moyes is a big fan of Brownhill, but guaranteed game time could be crucial in persuading him to make his next move.
Everton could snap up a sensational free agent signing
Everton were offered Brownhill last summer, but this time around they could snap him up on a free transfer.
With a considerable chunk of Everton’s £100m budget already spent, Kinnear is going to have to get clever in the market, and a free agent signing could be crucial.
Having previously worked under Sean Dyche at Burnley, the 54-year-old manager hailed Brownhill as ‘terrific’ in a post-match press conference.
Brownhill enjoyed a stunning 2024/25 campaign in the Championship where he showed the type of creativity that Moyes would love at Everton.
Moyes wants to see improvements in attack, and a player like Brownhill has shown he could really up the competition amongst the likes of Alcaraz and Dwight McNeil.
