How much Manchester City have spent on transfer so far this summer compared to the rest of the Premier League.
Manchester City have gotten stuck right into the summer transfer window as Pep Guardiola looks to rebuild his side ready for a fresh shot at claiming back the Premier League title.
After dropping away from the top spot chase last season and finishing third, the focus will be on making up significant ground on new champions Liverpool.
While significant departures including Kevin De Bruyne and Kyle Walker mark the end of an era at City, they continue to navigate what is shaping up to be one of the most exciting windows in a long time.
Liverpool are also recruiting well, with the likes of Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike looking to turbocharge their threat in attack. But how does each club’s summer business so far stack up against their rivals? Let’s take a look at City’s signings and how much they have spent at this point in the window.
Who have Man City signed this transfer window?
Tijjani Reijnders: City brought in midfielder Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan in June, following a superb season in Italy. The Netherlands international contributed the most goals and assists of any midfielder in Serie A last campaign, with a combined 15 in the league and 20 in all competitions. Reijnders was a standout star in an otherwise disappointing Milan season, who could only muster up an eighth-place finish in the Italian league, missing out on European football.
Rayan Aït-Nouri: City secured the signing of Rayan Aït-Nouri in time to include him in their Club World Cup squad. The left-back joined the club on a five-year deal from Premier League rivals Wolves, who have also sold Matheus Cunha to Man United. Aït-Nouri was a key player for Wolves, missing just one Premier League match last season. New City director of football Hugo Viana revealed that the club had been long-term admirers of the Algerian before they secured his signature in June.
Rayan Cherki: Adding more firepower to their midfield, City announced the signing of Rayan Cherki from Lyon early in the window. With Guardiola clearly looking to add more threat to his side’s presence in front of goal, Cherki was hand-picked following an impressive season in France. The Frenchman, who can play in attacking midfield or on the right, tallied 13 goals and 21 assists in all competitions last season for OL.
Sverre Nypan: After being linked with Arsenal during the January window, Sverre Nypan wanted to wait until the summer to decide on his future, which ended up being a move to Man City instead. The promising young Norwegian has made the move from Rosenborg on a five-year deal. Nypan is an attacking midfielder by trade but can also operate on the right wing and as a centre-forward.
Marcus Bettinelli: City plucked senior goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli from rivals Chelsea on a one-year deal following the news of Scott Carson’s departure. The 33-year-old came as Guardiola’s second signing, following their move for Aït-Nouri. Bettinelli joined the club for a nominal fee and brings plenty of English football experience.
James Trafford: City have set a new record fee for a British goalkeeper after signing James Trafford from newly promoted side Burnley. The Citizens had a matching clause inserted in their deal when they sold the shot-stopper to the Clarets in 2023.
