Luka Doncic makes huge commitment separate from his Lakers extension

Fans of the Los Angeles Lakers can breathe a sigh of relief, as star guard Luka Doncic has agreed to a deal with the team that will keep him under contract for the long haul. The Slovenian and the iconic organization have come to terms on a three-year, $165 million contract extension with a player option for the 2028-29 season.

Not only is Doncic now in line to remain with the Lakers for the foreseeable future, but he added a wholesome twist to the announcement of his lucrative extension. He shared that he’s committing a whopping $5 million to help young athletes across the globe “chase their dreams.”

Today I’m also committing $5 million to help 77 young athletes around the world chase their dreams, just like I did. Basketball gave me everything, and I’m lucky to be able to give back and help the next generation.

Doncic projects to be the Lakers’ face of the franchise for years to come. He’s universally perceived to be one of the premier players in the NBA, and he should still have loads of productive basketball left in the tank at just 26 years old. He might already have taken the mantle from star forward LeBron James as the best player on the Lakers, too.

The Lakers gave up a lot in order to acquire Doncic’s services, so it’s evident that they didn’t want to trade away all the assets they did just for Doncic to walk in free agency in the summer of 2026.

Doncic was dealt to the Lakers in the middle of the 2024-25 campaign in a move that shocked countless people. The Dallas Mavericks received star big man Anthony Davis, guard Max Christie and a first-round pick in 2029 in exchange for Doncic and a couple smaller pieces.

The trade has aged well for the Lakers and poorly for the Mavericks up to this point. Dallas didn’t even qualify for the 2025 NBA Playoffs after it advanced all the way to the 2024 NBA Finals with Doncic leading the way. The Lakers, meanwhile, were eliminated in the first round last season, but their partnership with Doncic has put them on an exciting trajectory.

Hopefully, Doncic and the Lakers will continue their relationship for many years to come and win a championship or two in the process as well.
