Manchester United are set to suffer a massive setback in the transfer market as striking reports have emerged from Slovenia, claiming that the Red Devils’ priority target, Benjamin Sesko, is expected to pick Newcastle United as his next destination.

The 22-year-old was previously on the radar of Arsenal, but the Gunners opted to sign his RB Leipzig teammate Viktor Gyokeres. United and Newcastle are both in contention to sign the striker, as all their prior targets have met their takers.

Man U and Newcastle in contention to sign Benjamin Sesko

Ruben Amorim has missed out on Liam Delap, who signed with Chelsea, and Gyokeres this summer and hence they have set their target on Sesko. United were optimistic about the deal, as it was earlier reported that Sesko’s preference was a move to Old Trafford. However, that stance seems to have changed.

According to the Slovenian newspaper Delo, Newcastle have managed to convince Sesko to shift base to St James’ Park in lieu of Old Trafford. The report further states that the Magpies’ proposal has successfully wooed Sesko.

More from Football

Since both United and Newcastle need a new striker, it will eventually come down to who wants more. United desperately wants to improve its squad following the 15th-place finish in the league last season. Newcastle, on the other hand, have lost Hugo Ekitike to Liverpool, and there is a reasonable chance that the Premier League champions will rope in Alexander Isak from their squad.

Isak apparently fancies a move to Anfield and has made his intention clear by not turning to train with the team and pulling out of their pre-season tour.

If Newcastle beat United in the race to sign Sesko, then Ollie Watkins will expectedly emerge as the new priority target for Ruben Amorim’s side.

Notably, Manchester United have made two massive signings in the current transfer window. They brought Matheus Cunha from Wolves and Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford. Both players are expected to improve the offensive line of the club.
