Man United have signed three players so far this summer, and they have also seen five departures.
Ruben Amorim’s summer rebuild is well underway, and the Man United boss has already made improvements in attack and at wing-back.
With just over a month left in the window, we decided to rate each incoming and outgoing that United have seen so far this summer...
Rating Manchester United’s new signings
Bryan Mbeumo - 8/10: United added Mbeumo from Brentford for a hefty fee of up to £71m, which is a lot of money for a club without much to spend. However, the 25-year-old was no doubt one of the best attackers in the Premier League last season, scoring 20 goals. The Red Devils’ attacking play was their biggest weakness last year, so keeping it simple and signing one of the best difference-makers in the Premier League is a safe, yet impactful signing. A great bit of business by United.
Diego Leon - 8/10: United also brought in young wing-back Diego Leon, who they paid just £3.3m for earlier in the summer. The Paraguayan left-back is comfortable playing an attacking role, and could challenge Patrick Dorgu for the starting spot on the left. Seeing as he is just 18, it is impressive that he has already begun to turn heads in a United shirt. He played against Leeds in pre-season and looked comfortable in Amorim’s system, so certainly one to watch. At such a cheap price, he has to be rated well as a star for the future.
Matheus Cunha - 9/10: Cunha joined from Wolves for £62.5m, and it has to be considered United’s best piece of business so far, as he is exactly the sort of player that the Red Devils have been crying out for over the past couple of years. Someone who has more fire in his belly and isn’t afraid to get too passionate, which has got him in trouble in the past. United need players with that spark, and Cunha certainly has that. He is well-suited to one of the number 10 roles that Amorim plays, but he can also play as a striker. He scored 15 goals in the Premier League for Wolves last year. A superb signing.
Rating Manchester United’s summer transfer exits
Daniel Gore - 7/10: 20-year-old midfielder Gore spent last year on loan at Rotherham, and he has left again to join the League One club to gain more first-team experience. This is a good move from a United perspective, as it will help Gore’s development.
Marcus Rashford - 2/10: Rashford was one of the players that United needed to sell this summer, but instead they managed to just send him out on loan. The England international joined Barcelona on a season-long loan, with a £26m option to buy at the end of the year. Firstly, it’s good that United have got Rashford’s wages off the books, but they need more transfer budget, and sending the attacker on loan won’t help with that. Plus, an option to buy of just £26m; Considering that his option at Villa was £40m, that has dropped significantly. If Barcelona decide against buying him too, they will have the same problem next summer.
Victor Lindelof - 4/10: Lindelof left as a free agent after his contract expired following a 10-year spell at Old Trafford. He isn’t a huge loss as he made just 16 Premier League appearances last year, but he does provide depth and experience, something that United badly lack.
Christian Eriksen - 3/10: Eriksen also left as a free agent, and this one feels like a bigger loss, considering Man United’s lack of depth behind Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo in midfield. The former Spurs star was a useful asset for Amorim, and they could have tried to extend his contract by just a year in order to have the Danish midfielder as a backup option. He will need to be replaced.
Jonny Evans - 6/10: Evans retired, so it is hard to argue against his departure, and if anything, United have benefited from it. The Northern Irishman now has a role as United’s head of loans, so he will still contribute to the club, just not as a player.
