Luka Doncic agrees to 3-year contract extension with Lakers: 'This is just the beginning'

LOS ANGELES - Luka Dončić is staying loyal to the Purple and Gold.

On Saturday, the Los Angeles Lakers reached a three-year contract extension for a reported $165 million.

What we know:

ESPN reported the contract extension after speaking with Doncic’s agent, Billy Duffy with WME.

The sports outlet also reported the extension will eliminate his player option for the 2026-27 season and will give him flexibility in 2028.

The move proves LA’s commitment to the 26-year-old international superstar.

Doncic had a role in recruiting DeAndre Ayton and Smart during the offseason.

Meanwhile, there’s been plenty of speculation about what the future looks like for LeBron James as he enters his 23rd season in the league. For now, he’s set to return to the Lake Show.

What they're saying:

Doncic was all smiles in his social media post about the news.

I just signed my extension with the Lakers. Excited to keep working to bring championships to LA and make Laker Nation proud. Grateful to the Lakers, my teammates and all the fans who’ve shown so much love since day one. This is just the beginning," the post said.

The backstory:

The Lakers acquired Doncic in a blockbuster three-team trade ahead of February’s trade deadline that sent big man Anthony Davis and Max Christie to Dallas.
