Forget Isak: Liverpool must focus on deal for ‘world-class’ star after formal offer made [view]

Liverpool must forget about doing a deal to sign Alexander Isak in the near future and instead focus on selling Darwin Nunez, after a formal offer was made for his services.

Few could have foreseen just how dominant Liverpool would be in what was Arne Slot’s debut season in English football. Seemingly feeling no pressure from taking on a role held for almost a decade by Jurgen Klopp, Slot guided Liverpool to the Premier League title with four games to spare.

In the weeks since lifting the trophy, Liverpool have made clear that their title is one that they intend on defending. The club have signed both Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen, the latter in a deal that could become a British record transfer fee.

Elsewhere, Liverpool have recruited the highly-rated Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth and striker Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt. The Reds are far from finished in the transfer market, with Liverpool pursuing Newcastle's star striker Alexander Isak.

In Isak, Liverpool would be signing one of the best forwards in the world, but perhaps they should focus their priorities elsewhere, at least for the short term.

Liverpool Need to Sell Nunez

Uruguayan would generate a sizable fee

In signing Ekitike, Liverpool spent an initial fee of £69 million, hardly the price tag of a player that serves as a back-up striker which, were Isak to sign, Ekitike would become. The French international would, in theory, be comfortable playing alongside Isak, but chances are Ekitike would be deployed out wide, given Slot favours playing with one striker, which is not his natural position.

As such, before pressing on with signing Isak, Liverpool should focus on completing the sale of Darwin Nunez. The Uruguayan, who signed from Benfica for a base fee of £64 million in 2022, has struggled for consistency at Anfield, something that was especially apparent last season.

Nunez, who has been called “world-class” in the past, would most likely not be sold for as much as he was bought for. He would, though, presumably cost a fee that would see Liverpool recoup much of what they spent which, in turn, would allow them to pursue further signings. Al Hilal have reportedly made a "formal offer" for the forward and have made him a priority signing.

With Ekitike through the door, along with players such as Cody Gakpo within the ranks, Isak is not an absolute priority for Liverpool and a player that they, most likely, could look at later in the window. Nunez being sold should, for now, be the club’s main focus.
