Manchester United still plan to add a new midfielder to Ruben Amorim’s squad ahead of the 2025/26 season.
There is no denying that the 2024/25 campaign was turbulent for Manchester United.
The Red Devils struggled in every department on the pitch, which explains why Ruben Amorim is trying to address multiple areas of the team.
Matheus Cunha arrived from Wolves, a month before Bryan Mbeumo signed following a deal with Brentford. These two players are expected to fulfil the number 10 roles next season, but Amorim is planning for more arrivals so long as United can sell unwanted players like Antony, Alejandro Garnacho and Jadon Sancho.
United want to sign a striker and they’ve been heavily linked with a move for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko as well as Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins.
It is also understood that Amorim wants to sign a goalkeeper and a midfielder.
United fans will be eager to see all of the new arrivals come in with time to prepare for the new competitive campaign.

Manchester United considered Joao Palhinha swoop
The search for a new midfielder has been a peculiar one, given that there haven’t been many targets named in the press.

Ineos may be waiting patiently to see what options come available later in the window, as that gives them more time to try to sell players.
Some of the midfielders linked with United over the summer include Ederson and Douglas Luiz, with both players currently playing in Serie A.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano claims it’s still a possibility that United will add to their midfield this summer.
“I think it’s a possibility. If there is the right opportunity in the market. If United have found all of the solutions for the players they want to sell, I think there is a chance for them after the striker and maybe a goalkeeper to also consider a new midfielder. That’s a serious possibility. It’s a serious opportunity. Let’s follow that one.”
Romano added that United considered a swoop for Bayern Munich’s Joao Palhinha, before deciding they wanted a different type of midfielder, who would play with more intensity.
“I can give you one secret from Man United at the beginning of the window, end of May or the start of June. They considered the opportunity to go for Joao Palhinha, who is Portuguese like Ruben Amorim, who knows the player so well.
“Now Palhinha is going to Tottenham on a loan deal with a €30 million buy option. Manchester United decided eventually to go for a different player. Less holding midfielder. Still defensive but more intensity. Let’s see what is going to happen.”
Palhinha begins Tottenham medical
With United passing on the opportunity to sign Palhinha, Tottenham have moved in to secure his signature on loan with the option to sign him next summer.
According to BILD, Palhinha is already in the process of completing his medical, and he has done the first part of it in Munich.
Palhinha will finish his medical elsewhere before joining up with the Tottenham squad.
The Portugal international struggled to nail down a starting role in the Munich team last season.
Now, the former Fulham star is on the verge of returning to the Premier League.
