Manchester United are slowly yet surely realizing this summer just how difficult it is to sign top-class players when the sporting project is not up to the mark.

The past couple of seasons has seen the Red Devils miss out on Champions League football. Last season, they recorded an astonishingly low 15th place finish in the Premier League.

Erik ten Hag and then, subsequently, Ruben Amorim have been tasked with resurrecting the club and taking them back to their glory days but that is easier said than done.

Now, as per journalist, Florian Plettenberg, Manchester United have been handed a blow as Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak recently rejected the English club’s approach, stating his preference for a move to Liverpool.

Isak was arguably the best striker in the Premier League last season. He helped Newcastle United win their first ever trophy in many years and it looks like the Swedish striker is keen on moving to a new club this summer. He currently earns around £120,000 a week at the Tyneside club.

Liverpool look to be very interested in signing him and even the player has an agreement with Man Utd’s rivals to sign a contract until 2031.

Man Utd turned down by strikers

If the Red Devils had a project that was advanced enough, maybe they could have convinced the Swede to continue his career at Old Trafford. Unfortunately, that is unlikely to be the case.

It is not just Isak, though. The 20-time English champions have also missed out on strikers like Viktor Gyokeres and Hugo Ekitike this summer, two players who have ended up in the Premier League and would have massively helped the club with their number nine issue.

With not many options left in the market, it looks like Man Utd would be forced to go into another season with Rasmus Hojlund as their striker.

It remains to be seen how their search for a new number nine plays out.
