Liverpool's stance has become clearer after their £110m offer for Alexander Isak was rejected by rivals Newcastle United. There is little under one month of the summer transfer window to go as this situation threatens to encroach on the new campaign.
But Liverpool have little concern for this as they take stock of a situation that has a number of turning cogs in play. Just because no second bid is lined up immediately after the first was rejected does not mean it will not come at all.
After it emerged he wanted a transfer, Isak has been absent from his club whilst they took part in a pre-season tour of Asia, even taking action by departing to Spain to do individual training. But the 25-year-old was reportedly in line to reconvene with teammates upon their return to Newcastle.
Here, the ECHO gathers the latest on Isak and transfers tied to the ongoing uncertainty surrounding his future.
Newcastle return
Sky Sports North East reporter Keith Downie has reported Isak as having flown back into Newcastle on Saturday afternoon, as were his club orders to do so.
Whilst Eddie Howe's team were in the Far East, the striker reportedly took it upon himself to venture to Spain and control his own training programme. He did so using the facilities of former club Real Sociedad.
He is therefore set to rejoin team training after the weekend, less than two weeks before the new season starts.
That is unless Liverpool were to spring a sudden attempt - one that Newcastle chose to accept.
Darwin Nunez exit
One of the situations tied to Isak's potential arrival on Merseyside is the departure of Darwin Nunez.
The No.9 had been expected to leave even before the window opened in June though he has remained part of Arne Slot's squad for pre-season. Still, talk of a move before the window closes has not subsided just yet.
Fabrizio Romano believes it is the No.9's wish to leave Anfield, so the Reds are doing all they can to facilitate this at their €65m (£56.7m) asking price. If unable to sell at this level, they could reduce the price slightly closer to the end of the summer.
Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Hilal are keeping close watch of the situation but this report, along with others from Italy, now suggest AC Milan see the Uruguayan as a top target.
These two options for Nunez to leave are left to fight it out in August.
