Liverpool pursue £80m Alexander Isak alternative after Newcastle United reject bid

Newcastle United rejected Liverpool’s first bid for Alexander Isak on Friday.

Liverpool have reportedly stepped up their interest in Real Madrid forward Rodrygo after Newcastle United rejected a bid for Alexander Isak.

Toon chiefs were left furious on Friday when the Reds made an opening bid. Understood to be worth around £110million, the fee was considered “derisory” by Newcastle given his well-documented £150million price tag.

Conflicting details have emerged about whether Liverpool will return with another offer. What remains clear is that Isak - recently training in Spain at former club Real Sociedad - wants out.

Eddie Howe on Alexander Isak

The Swede is expected on Tyneside when Eddie Howe's men return to training on Wednesday. All eyes will be on whether Isak plays ball or digs his heels in further to force a move.

Speaking on the saga at a press conference in South Korea, Toon boss Howe confirmed the rejected bid while revealing officials in England are handling the saga. He told reporters: "I was made aware of a bid yesterday and that bid was turned down, all before I’d even heard about it. People back in England are dealing with the situation.

“I don’t know what happens next. From our perspective, we still support Alex in every way and my wish is that we see him in a Newcastle shirt again. I know where he is, really, through the media. From that perspective, it’s difficult for me to go into any kind of detail. The situation is far from ideal and is quite complex."

Liverpool change transfer tack

ESPN Brazil claim Liverpool have already held talks with Rodrygo’s representatives. Uncertainty has surrounded the South American - valued at £80million - all summer.

For whatever reason, Rodrygo has always felt valued less than the more “Galactico” names at the Bernabeu. His minutes are not as guaranteed as Kylian Mbappe’s or Vinicius Junior’s and, at 24, a move for first-team football could catapult his career to the next level.

With Luis Diaz leaving and Diogo Jota’s tragic passing, Rodrygo, as a wideman, would be a more natural option for Liverpool. Hugo Ekitike - a more recognised striker - arrived earlier in the summer having rejected a Toon move.
